Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education with Citizenship

Pupils at Hall Mead School study PSHE education with Citizenship for one period a week in years 7-9 and 1 lesson a fortnight in year 10. PSHE and Citizenship Education helps young people embrace change, feel positive about who they are and enjoy healthy, safe, responsible and fulfilled lives, taking an active part in the world around them.

The topics studied include:

Relationships: Puberty

Citizenship: the Law and Young People

Introduction to finance

Staying healthy: Smoking

Keeping Safe: enjoying life and managing risk

Citizenship: The power of the media – body image

Relationships: families

Economic Awareness: keeping to budget

Staying Healthy: Dealing with loss

Citizenship: Parliamentary Democracy

Alcohol

Relationships: commitment and healthy/unhealthy relationships (including domestic violence)

Sex and relationships education including: sexuality, pregnancy and issues around sexual activity e.g. contraception, delay and emotional aspects.

Staying healthy: Drugs

Citizenship: Human Rights and Responsibilities

 

 

These themes will be returned to during Years 10 and 11. Outside speakers and specialist educational groups are also invited into the school to further develop themes or work with students on issues such as delaying sexual activity, teenage pregnancy, young people and the law and anti-social behavior.

Parents’ views and input into the PSHE and citizenship curriculum are always welcomed. Pupils also have a say on aspects of the curriculum which ensures that the curriculum is relevant to their lives and needs.
